SLUG Says…

Published by Duane Call on 22 Nov 2011 | No Comments

Our pals at SLUG are always generous with their coverage of the BB–thanks!

If there was a homemade or crafting mecca, I think it would have to be in Utah County. Those ladies have been perfecting the art of DIY for generations. It’s bred into them from their pioneer roots—canning, scrapbooking, quilting and knitting.  The Beehive Bazaar takes the best of the crafting traditions, like handmade Christmas stockings and homemade jams, and throws in trendy jewelry, repurposed clothing and the latest in one-of-a-kind kids’ clothes. My girl friends and I make a pilgrimage each year to the land of plenty (children and crafts that is). My $18 bee necklace has been the envy of many people over the years and a staple in my wardrobe. Now located at the Bell Room on the the corner of University and Center Street in Provo, The Bazaar takes place Thurs., Dec. 8, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m., Fri., Dec. 9, 10 a.m. – 10 p.m and Sat., Dec. 10, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. For more details, friend them on Facebook.”

Holiday 2011 Young Crafters…

Published by Molly Call on 23 Oct 2011 | No Comments

Once again, our Young Crafters have lots to share.
Check them out…

Kinsley Lewis, Jade and Sage Redden

  • We are three sisters that love to be creative.  We would like to make headbands, pom pom hair elastics, flower hair clips, and cards with our art on them that can be colored. We may even come up with  fun coloring books of our artwork. Kinsley is 11, Jade is 9, and Sage is 7.

AnnieBlue

I have been doing art ever since I could hold a pencil. Most of what I do is people– girls really. My art has sort of a twisted Alice-In-Wonderland feel to it. I do cartoons for bedrooms, little old ladies, and gothic. . . . anything really. I do a pretty broad range, so if you need me to do something for you, chances are I’d be delighted. I am twelve years old and live in PG, UT.

Eli, Isabel & Asher

Eli, 11, Isabel, 8, and Asher, 6, are entrepreneurs at heart, and among the most crafty kids I know.  They craft constantly, and carefully chose their crafts for this event.

Other Young Crafters include…

Lily & Grace Higginbotham

Lola, Maude & Ruby Call

Tiare Cutri

Ali Payton

Isabell & Millie Yarro

Young Crafters…

Published by Molly Call on 11 Nov 2010 | No Comments

We are excited to include our Young Crafters again this season. Here is a sneak peek of what they have to share.

Cloe, Brody and Abbey Brown

They will be making fish-in-a-bag soap and cupcake bath bombs.  Cloe is 8 and loves to write stories and writes some pretty impressive stories.  She loves to make things with her hands and be creative and enjoys playing soccer and basketball.  Brody is 7 and enjoys playing sports, soccer is his favorite and likes to play super hero games.  He is always making weapons and his favorite game is Indiana Jones.  Abbey is 5 and is a total character.  She loves fashion and always has her hair fixed with way too many hair bows.  She loves animals and riding her bike with the neighbor kids.

Noah Schmitz

Hi! My name is Noah Schmitz. I am fourteen years old. I have always wanted to be a computer guy like my Dad when I grow up. A few years ago I built my own computer out of spare parts, but it wasn’t very fast. I have been saving my money to buy my own computer for a couple of years now, and last summer I came up with the idea that I could make rubber band guns to sell. I sold some at farmer’s markets and festivals this summer, and am well on my way to meeting my goal. Thank you.

Reed Sisters

We are the Reed Sisters, last year there were 2 of us, but this year we are going to let our little sister in on the business as well. Here is a little bit about us:

Bronwyn Reed: I am the oldest sister, I love sock monkeys, Paris and most anything vintage. I like to be in musicals and I take voice lessons. I am on a swim team and in my spare time I love to craft with my mom and sisters. I am 10. Bronwyn is going to make some masks that she has an idea for.

Brooklyn Reed: I am the middle sister. I love to play school and I want to be a second grade teacher someday. I also take ballet and was just cast in the “Nutcracker” so I am in rehearsals for that. I love to draw and write notes. I also love to craft with my mom and sisters. I am 7.  Brooklyn and Bella will also be making some fairy wands.

Bella Reed: I am the youngest sister. I love to swim and play soccer. I also love to glue and make things. I am happy that my older sisters are letting me in on their little business this year. I am 5.  The three of us will be making bottle cap necklaces.

And the vendors are…

Published by Duane Call on 11 Oct 2010 | No Comments

Dear everyone,

This was possibly the most difficult time we’ve ever had choosing vendors for the show–so many applicants and so much talent–wow.

As with every show we try to keep our magic ratio just right:

       50% Beehive veterans +
       50% new vendors +
As little duplication as possible +
       Totally handmade, unique and quality
       ————————————————–
= What we always hope will be the best craft show you’ve ever attended.

This means that even crafters we absolutely adore have to warm the bench sometimes while others get a chance to play. So, we hope those people who didn’t make it in this year will be sure to apply for the next show– don’t give up!

Now, without further ado, we’re pleased to announce the roster for the Holiday 2010 Beehive Bazaar:

Young Crafters

Published by Molly Call on 18 Apr 2010 | No Comments

Every season Beehive Bazaar supports the Young Crafter by having  a section in our show that highlights them and their work.  Here are some of this springs talent.  It is definitely something to buzz about…

Bowie and Darby Hayes

Bowie Hayes  11 ~ HoOpLa!

After the success of squishy fishy at the last show, Bowie decided to start a new idea ~ HoOpLa!
Twirling a hula hoop is lots of fun, so grab a hoop get out in the sun and let your hips twist away
and find out what all the HoOpLa is about!

Darby Hayes 9 ~ squishy fishy

Darby is excited to make a new batch of squishy fishy for the spring show! The great insta-pet
that’s super easy to take care for and is always ready for a cuddle.  Look for the same cute fishes
in fun new colors and patterns.

Taetum, Lola, Maude & Ruby Call

Like mother, like daughter…four daughters that is! These lovely little craftetes are following in the ways of their mother Molly and even taking a few creative cues from their old man, Duane. This year thay are making felt picture frames–a color to match every wall in your house!

Brooklyn and Bronwyn Reed

We are two sisters, and we love crafts. Here are a few things about ourselves.

Brooklyn is six years old and loves ballet and to read she also likes art and math.

Bronwyn is very crafty she collects sock monkeys. She takes after her mom and loves vintage things like hats, jewrey, etc.

Brooklyn and Bronwyn like to make bottle cap necklaces.  They usually make them for friends as gifts, but would like to sell them this year at the Beehive Bazaar.

Jade and Miah

we’re best friends, that’s why we decided to do this together!   jade is in 5th grade and miah is in 6th grade.   we like to hang out and have fun!  it would be really fun to make a craft together for the BEEHIVE BAZAAR:)

Carina Ream

Carina Is the oldest of 4 kids. She has always loved to sit and do crafts of different kinds. She started making bracelets when she was 9, because I gave her a bracelet kit for Christmas. By the time school started again she had done all the patterns, and were down at wallmart spending her Christmas money on more beats, wire, locks and so on. It has been fun to see her talent grow and see how she has been coming up with new designs, color combination’s and styles over the years.

Beehive Bazaar

by: Jessica Davis (ms.lovelyq@gmail.com)

[Noelle Olpin, Duane Call and Molly Call. Illustration: Manuel Aguilar]

Crafting. If you haven’t heard of the new generation of crafters, the word itself can conjure up images of a granny with knitting needles making pastel fuzzy sweaters. The Beehive Bazaar, produced and founded by Noelle Olpin and the husband-wife team Molly and Duane Call, is a craft fair for those trendy crafters cleverly disguised as mothers, girlies and possibly the cute boy in the freshly screen-printed tee.

The current incarnation of the Beehive Bazaar was started back in 2004. Molly Call, Noelle Oplin and Stephanie Higginbotham, three crafty moms living in Utah County, decided to come together and share their talents. Instead of trying to set aside ‘craft time’ they decided to be productive by calling it the Beehive Bazaar, in hopes a name would make it happen. Starting as a quiet event in a small rented house, it eventually grew and moved to the Women’s Council Cultural Center in Provo, turning into a bi-annual event, taking place over multiple days, that features 75 of the best new artists/crafters from around Utah. As the once-small gathering of friends casually sharing their love to craft began attracting hundreds of applicants and many more hungry buyers, a change in organization became apparent. Ultimately, it was inevitable that the Bazaar would outgrow its home in the Women’s Council Cultural Center.

At the last Beehive Bazaar, Duane Call recalls nine-and-a-half month pregnant woman standing as the last in line at 1 a.m., with two full bags of handmade goods, on the phone with her husband, “[She was] saying, no her water hadn’t broke, and yes she was checking out. We had to run each little item and it takes like 15 minutes to type in each item. At the end, we hit the wrong button and erased the whole thing.” He says, “With a check-out line wait at around two hours, it became a test of weeding out the weak.” To avoid the long-lines and stress encountered at the last Bazaar, Olpin and the Calls have decided to relocate to Thanksgiving Point for this year’s Spring Bazaar.

Although the last Beehive Bazaar was held in December, the planning to make the Spring Bazaar bigger and better keeps the organizers busy. “It’s a never ending process of preparing for the next show. It’s gone from something we had to stop to think about, to an almost full time thing,” says Oplin. With event coordinating, set-up, maintenance and check-out becoming overwhelming, Thanksgiving Point was decided as the best move, with the perks of a convention center able to handle set-up, tear-down and all customer check-out arrangements––aspects of the event that previously left Olpin and the Call’s without a lunch break.

Although there’s more space, the number of artists will stay the same, but the Beehive Bazaar will be able to provide more entertainment. Before, you mingled and ate free cupcakes while waiting in line. This year, there will be door prizes, live bands and a ‘meet and greet’ the artists—which at previous events wasn’t practical. “There’s Gentry of Frosty Darling. She plays the part so well, and now you can see the artist and get excited to know that’s what they do,” says Duane. “Making you want their creations even more,” says Oplin.

With Thanksgiving Point as a midway point, hopefully it will intrigue more people from both the Salt Lake and Provo areas to come out. Entrance to the event will stay free as before, except for opening night, which will be a VIP night. “Everyone wants to come the first night because you have first dibs,” says Molly. Most of the items being one-of-a-kind makes it understandable that patrons filled the building within the first hour last time, followed by the fire department. “So a small price will be worth not having to crawl over everyone else,” says Oplin.

From 2004 to 2010, Molly says it started out as a way to contribute to Provo. “Now we just want to make it special, to be like Christmas,” says Duane, “with the consumer ideas today of want, buy and simply going out and getting it nothing is special anymore because there’s not a wait. We want people to celebrate their brains out. When we don’t feel that anymore, we might as well find a spot at the mall.” “Though we will have a shop online for certain hand-picked items this summer,” says Molly.

From hand-sewn to recycled-vintage, grandma has been revamped. Whether you’re in need of hand-sewn dolls, Utah themed soap, or simply something new and eyebrow-raising, the Spring 2010 Beehive Bazaar is your best stop to find it.

Mad Max and the Wild Ones is a rockin’ family band from Springville, Utah. On lead guitar is Wyatt Maxwell, age 18. Wyatt got his first guitar when he was eight and hasn’t put it down since! Wyatt is the youngest guitar player to be sponsored by Gretsch Guitars. Cole’s stick twirling and amazing solos have made drummers three times his age hang their heads in shame!! Nine year old Duke is on lead vocals, rhythm guitar and harmonica. He has been called such things as “Johnny Cash reincarnated”, and the “new King of Rock and Roll”! Dad was the last one to pick up an instrument. He was feeling left out so Mom bought him a double bass for Christmas and the boys taught him how to play it. Since then these boys have been delighting audiences all across the country and overseas. They have even been called “The Greatest Band In The World! (under 400 lbs)

this season… take the pledge!

Published by Noelle Olpin on 24 Nov 2008 | No Comments

I Took The Handmade Pledge! BuyHandmade.org

Why buy handmade?

Buying Handmade makes for better gift-giving.

The giver of a handmade gift has avoided the parking lots and long lines of the big chain stores in favor of something more meaningful. If the giver has purchased the gift, s/he feels the satisfaction of supporting an artist or crafter directly. The recipient of the handmade gift receives something that is one-of-a-kind, and made with care and attention that can
be seen and touched. It is the result of skill and craftsmanship that is absent in the world of large-scale manufacturing.

Buying handmade is better for people.

The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. We are encouraged to be consumers, not producers, of our own culture. Our ties to the local and human sources of our goods have been lost. Buying handmade helps us reconnect.

Buying handmade is better for the environment.

The accumulating environmental effects of mass production are a major cause of global warming and the poisoning of our air, water and soil. Every item you make or purchase from a small-scale independent artist or crafter strikes a small blow to the forces of mass production.
